Why does my modem suddenly disconnect?
|

A.

Providing a high quality, uninterupted online session is one of Venner Computer Services
top priorities. We use only the highest quality equipment, including Digital 56k modems
and Remote Annex terminal servers. Maintaining a trouble free connection is by far the
norm for our clients, however certain conditions may lead to the interruption of an online
connection.
Call Waiting
Turn call waiting off! An incomming phone call will cause your connection to drop. You can
turn off call waiting by preceding VCS's phone number with "70#,". For example:
"70#,6746852". By dialing 70#, you will only turn off call waiting for that
particular phone call. Call waiting will reactivate as soon as you hang up.
Idle Time
Venner Computer Services will automatically disconnect a connection if no data is sent or
received for 15 consecutive minutes. This is done to free up our resources to support
other customers. If you wish to purchase a full time connection, please contact us for
dedicated line pricing.
Hardware Handshaking
If you have an internal modem, turn hardware handshaking on! If you have an external
modem, you may also wish to turn hardware handshaking on, but you need to make sure that
you have a hardware handshaking cable.
Port Speed
Try lowering your port speed. The port speed for a 14.4k modem can be safely set at 19,200
without effecting your total connection throughput. For a 28.8k or 33.6k modem, you can
safely set your port speed to 38,400.
Modem Init String
Try using a modem initilization string that is specific to your modem. Please refer to our
technical support question: Where
can I find my modem's proper initilization string? for more information.
Your Modem
Try borrowing a modem from a friend. Perhaps your modem was damaged in last week's
lightning storm? Or perhaps that combination 56k data, fax, and voice mail modem that you
bought last week for $29.99 wasn't such a bargain after all. In the world of computer
hardware, you usually get what you pay for. Manufactures who cut corners often sacrifice
reliability in order to reduce cost. Venner Computer Services recommends USRobotics,
and Hayes modems. VCS has, in the past, had problems with Cardinal and Zoom &
Motorola SM56K modems.
The Telephone Line
Plug a telephone into your modem and dial a local telephone number. Do you hear any static
on the line? If so, call your local telephone company and see if they can fix the problem
for you.
Conclusion
If you have investigated all of these possibilities, and still suspect that something is
going on, please contact us with your problem,
and have the following information available:
- Your modem manufacturer (ex: Supra, Hayes, USRobotics).
- Your modem model (ex: 14.4LC, Accura, Sportster)
- The date and time of any disconnections.
- Any other information you think may be helpful.
