There is a control panel that is unknown to man... It is the MacTCP Zone!!!
The first thing to remember when dealing with MacTCP control panel is that you are
dealing with a sentient and many times malevolent intelligence. People will tell you that
computers can't think, that you are actually the one in control, that you need
professional help, etc. However, after using MacTCP for any length of time at all you'll
come to the inevitable conclusion that these people need to take more medication. Clearly,
MacTCP is possessed. The question to ask yourself is, how evil is my copy?
Okay, so how is it supposed to be set up?
If you've used the installation disk provided by Venner Computer Services, you'll be
able to do something infinitely more interesting than reading this next part, such as
discovering what happens when you mix caffeinated coffee with decaf. On the other hand if
you bought an internet kit or book (you know, the ones with the disk hanging off the back
flap in the little baggie) you'll have to configure it yourself. Open the MacTCP control
panel, switch the network to "PPP" (the two icons along the top of the window)
and click the "More" button. Simply (ha ha) fill in the settings as so:
Don't worry about the upper-right section; you'll hardly ever need to fiddle with it.
Just set the class to "C" and you'll be fine. On the other hand, it's extremely
important that the section directly underneath is configured correctly. Make sure that the
first box of the first row is set to "ls.barrhead.ab.ca" and the one directly
across from it is set to 204.209.13.11. You'll find that the "Gateway IP" number
is locked and unchangable. To insert the correct IP (as shown above) simply toggle the
radio buttons above it to "Manual", plug in the number, and switch the buttons
back to "Server". According to many different and esteemed sources, this is not
the correct way to configure MacTCP. However, it seems to work.
