I have a 56k modem, but can only connect at 44k or 48k. Why?

Venner Computer Services has only 56k modems. These modems will support baud rates up to
56k. A connection of 44k or 52k will only happen under ideal circumstances, since this
type of connection uses 100% of the possible bandwidth that a normal telephone line can
supply. This has to do directly with the sampling rate on a telephone line. This is
described by the nyquist theorem and fourier transform
theory.
What this means is that connections of 44k or 49k are typical, and are a result of very
slight amounts of line noise present on any telephone line. Info from USR on slow connection
rates
